MAD architects is a RIBA Chartered architectural practice based in Chesterfield, creating design led, sustainable buildings in Sheffield, Chesterfield and throughout Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and the Peak District.

We are small practice with a proven flair for designing creative solutions that are backed up and built with fifteen years of technical experience. We provide a personal service at all stages of your project, but with the professional service expected of a larger practice.

We strive to create great designs that respect the environment. During the early design stages we integrate sustainable features, maximising benefits and minimising cost. By encouraging the adoption of sustainable principles into each project we aim to create architecture that offers benefits both today and for future generations.

We utilise leading BIM software to design all our projects in 3D, enabling us to spend more time designing your project, rather than just producing drawings.

Our 3D models are fully accessible by clients, enabling you to get a full understanding of your project rather than trying to interpret technical drawings.

We have experience of working on projects across the construction industry, ranging from individual house to offices & shopping centres.

Working together with other building professionals, including; structural engineers, energy assessors and 3D visualisers, we provide a complete building design service.

  • I would recommend this business

After talking to a number of architects about our ideas and vision, we were delighted to find that Martin understood them and then took them to the next level. His emphasis on 'flow' and light throughout the re-modelled house was the key to the work. With his support, advice and guidance we have a totally modernised four bedroom, three bathroom house with a new kitchen, and a natural 'flow' for people, air and light, plus a 21st century insulated property with extra external insulation and modern rendering. Martin's interest in 'green' development and 'future proofing' have allowed us to design into the future.. During construction Martin has been supportive and practical, dealing with technical and design issues professionally on our behalf.
Martin is a personable, friendly, open professional who will contribute positive ideas, but listens to the client brief. We would wholeheartedly recommend his services

Customer Testimonials

MAD Architects designed the extension to our new home. Martin listened to our requirements and suggested a number of different options, explaining possible problems and radical alternative solutions that we hadn’t thought of before providing a couple of concept designs.

We picked the design we liked best and fine tuned it with Martin before he submitted the planning and building regulation applications which were approved without any problems.

Martin service was very professional and he produced an interesting design that we think will be perfect for us.

MAD was commissioned to produce the technical drawings for our substantial home redevelopment. The work was completed to the highest standard with every detail in our brief being incorporated in the final design. The drawings were positively supported by the planners; the quality of the design was specifically highlighted in their report.

Martin’s experience gained in commercial architecture showed, the final detailed drawings were created with such a high level of detail, the tendering process progressed in a very efficient manner. The construction companies involved commended the detail, which enabled them to confidently provide accurate quotes without excessive contingency in the costings.

We would not hesitate to recommend MAD Architects, they did a fabulous job.

From Our Website

I've been a qualified architect for over 10 years, since I finished my 7 years of architectural training at the university of Sheffield. Before starting MAD I worked at a large commercial practice, in Sheffield and worked on a range of projects, for clients including the Home Office, Suzuki, Westfield shopping centres & developers Wilson Bowden. During this time I gained invaluable experience, including working on highly sustainable buildings such as the first BREEAM excellent office in Sheffield.

MAD have just received planning approval for our proposed alterations to a house on Dobcroft Road, Sheffield. The scheme involves the addition of a ground floor extension, creating an open plan kitchen, dining, family area and feature extensive glazed sliding doors, providing an indoor / outdoor living area. A glorious day in the countryside to see progress on site, with the extension walls completed, ready for installation of the roof terrace. The outbuilding is also developing well, with roof finishes in progress and reinforcement being prepared for the concrete slab.

The clients had a clear vision to transform this house into a throughly modern, light & open plan home. Internally the existing property has been completely reconfigured, including relocating the staircase to create a larger entrance hallway, with a double height gallery space allowing light deep into the heart of the property. The entrance area provides views of the rear garden through the next rear extension and access into the refurbished living room. Upstairs the existing rooms have been reconfigured to provide 2 bedroom & a new family bathroom.

MAD architects were approached to look at this fairly standard 3 bed bungalow. The clients aim was to undertake a major renovation and extension of the property to create a contemporary family home. Despite being on the outskirts of the peak district the original property did not take advantage of the views available. Internally the rooms to of the bungalow felt very boxy despite the structure being essentially open plan. Mad were able to develop a design featuring two new large extensions to the rear of the property, creating a new family dining area and a stylish formal living room, both featuring extensive glazing to maximise the views over the rolling countryside.

We know it is a little daunting, even scary, but that's OK, we've done this before. We have a proven professional process that will see your project develop from a hand drawn sketch right through to something wonderful. We will normally visit the proposed project with you, enabling us to introduce ourselves and run through the normal process of undertaking a project, the legislation involved and likely timescales. This is also an opportunity for us to undertake an initial analysis and assessment of the site and/ or building.
